Welcome to Saint Thibéry
Saint Thibéry is a charming historical village in the heart of Languedoc, 51 km from Montpellier, 22km from Béziers, 9,6 from Pézenas (historical village of Molière and Boby Lapointe) , 19km from Marseillan plage (nice beach).
Saint Thibéry is a village of great historical importance, originally named Cessaro after Caesar, when it was constructed in Roman times. A fantastic Roman Bridge and 12th Century Water Mill can be discovered at the end of a pretty little stroll out of the village and through the nearby woods, there is also a picturesque view of the local vineyards which can be seen from the bridge. St. Thibery’s church was originally an Abbey and now holds the sacred remains of St Thibere and St Florence. The village itself has been built over the last five hundred years, the oldest house being 16th Century, and its’ development is carefully controlled by the planning department.
Our favourite trips include a walk in the country where the two rivers (l'Hérault and La Tongue) meet; this is a perfect place to fish, canoe or just enjoy a picnic. Fishing permits can be purchased from the tobacco (even one day permits).
St Thibery is only a short drive from the historic market town of Pezenas, which is ideal for shopping and restaurants but don’t forget to visit their Saturday market for local produce, cheeses, meats, wine, olives, honey, flowers, basket-ware, clothing and shoes or simply enjoy a cup of coffee at a street café and take in all the sights and sounds. The nearest beach is at Vias Plage which is only 13 km away and has miles of golden sand to enjoy. Marseillan is only 19km away and has a fantastic marina, sailing school, excellent restaurants and is home to the local specialty Noilly Prat. Marseillan is a perfect place to enjoy Moules Frites and a glass of excellent Picpoul de Pinet. On Sundays we enjoy the market in Bessan, cheaper, and less poch than Pezenas.
The Mountains close and you can even journey onwards to the Millau Bridge, the Roquefort caves and the Massif Central. From June to August the mountains are beautiful with cherries, peaches, melons and apricots. We suggest enjoying a lunch at St. Guilhem le Desert and afterwards a swim at the river by Pont du Diable, or head further North to the French version of the Grand Canyon – Cirque de Navacelles. The historical seaside towns of Sète, Mèze and Agde are well worth a visit, especially when the water jousting is on. The historical and university city of Montpellier offers great shopping, restaurants, theatre, ancient sites. The Nine Locks of Beziers are well worth visiting, especially if there are boats traversing them.
BEACHES - The nearest beach is Valras plage (13km drive), but Marseillan-plage is only 19km away and enjoys lots of shops and social life.
DINING - There are many good restaurants in the area offering fantastic food and wine at reasonable prices. We recommend Pezenas for their “Pate de Pezenas” – a local delicacy created by Clive of India’s chef when he resided here, alternatively Bouzigues is the French home of Oysters and Mussels, and with a fantastic little harbor it is an ideal place to while away an hour or two. The historic port of Meze offers a quaint seaside beach and a multitude of harbor side restaurants, ranging from contemporary to traditional cuisine. St. Thibéry also has 3 restaurants: The Derby, which only serves lunches, reasonably priced we daily menus for less than 11 Euros. The Pizzeria serves fresh and daily plat du jour, as well as pizzas; the Saint Thib has a daily elegant menu.
